PL_UR_CAT4 is a four category urban-rural designation for the patient's county of residence.

  • Starting in the 2024 HCUP databases, the categorization is a simplified adaptation of the 2023 version of the Urban Influence Codes (UIC) (see PL_UIC2023).
  • In HCUP databases between 2014 and 2023, the categorization is a simplified adaptation of the 2013 version of the UIC.
  • In the HCUP databases prior to 2014, the categorization is a simplified adaptation of the 2003 version of the UIC.

The categories of the UIC are combined into four broader categories that differentiate between large and small metropolitan, micropolitan, and a non-urban residual as follows:
